Together Dr's Calvin and Tashlai have established a successful charter school in Toledo, OH and are working to expand their charter school network. Along with their charter school the couple has a successful Ohio Step Up to Quality 5 Star Preschool. Rise and Shine Academy received the 2017-2018 Ohio Auditor of the State Award. With the assistance of MBI, Rise and Shine Academy received an A in Value added 4 years in a row. This means under the direction of Dr's Burney Rise and Shine Academy grows their students academically 1.5 to 2 years each calendar year. Under the guidance of MBI, Rise and Shine Academy also experienced a 98 percent passing rate on the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. The school also received a B in the area of Gap Closing and in 2017 100% of the fifth and sixth grade students scored proficient on their State Math assessments.
